Morocco’s Throne Day : The US President Renew its Full Support to the Moroccan Sovereignty over the Sahara
In a very significant development, US President, Donald Trump addressed a letter to the King of Morocco, on the occasion of the Throne Day, in which he reiterated the US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and its full support to the Kingdom’s proposal of the Autonomy Plan “as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute”.
On the political level, this reaffirmed position, already expressed by the US in December 2020, opens the way for the remaining other few countries to follow and support Morocco’s Autonomy Plan which was described by the Moroccan Monarch as a consensual solution with no winner nor looser and that saves the face of all the parties.
it is worth mentioning that following the USA, many countries supported Morocco’s Autonomy Plan such as the two former colonial powers, Spain and France, as well as the United Kingdom, being the 3rd Permanent Member of the UN Security Council to do so, and Portugal along with many other European, African, Asian, Arab and Latin American countries.
President Trump’s message shows the lead once again in expressing the US government’s commitment to reinforcing the already strong and enduring partnership with Morocco in which promoting peace and stability as well as combatting terrorism stand as one of their key cooperation areas.
On the economic level, the US government’s efforts to implement significant investment projects in the region will pave the way not only for US investors but for other countries to benefit from the many opportunities offered by Morocco in its endeavor for the economic development of its Southern Provinces .
Through his letter, President Trump emphasised the growing strategic partnership between the United States and Morocco and reinforces the North African country’s role as an important key player in both regional and international matters.
